You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave

I know loads of people have fun with Facebook, but I have a strong urge to vent, and vent I certainly will! Stand back! Fasten your safety-belts! Put on your asbestos suits! MM is breathing fire, I tell you!

Facebook is as plastic as bubblegum, and why? Because it’s a public persona, and most people don’t really want other people to know what they’re up to and who they really are. Well, I don’t! Especially not the ones who think they know me.

If one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, one sure as anything shouldn’t judge a person by their facebook. There’s very little of them in there when all’s said.

Facebook personalities are about as bland as a bowl of oats porridge without sprinkles – you don’t even get the occasional nut. Everything is hunky-dory, and life is so wonderful, and I have so many friends!

And that brings me to ‘friends’ of the facebook sort. Someone you barely know but have met, or think you might have met, asks to be a friend. What do you do? You don’t want to offend, so you accept and end up with eleventymillion ‘friends’ who you don’t really give a stuff about and who don’t really give a stuff about you. (Pardonnez vous ma francais, and all that)

Then there are the ones that you do care about, at least sort-of, and whom you joined Facebook to find. A lot of water has been passed under the bridge (being as bridges are good places to pass water under if the need arises) since you last saw them, and even if you do still have something in common, you probably won’t find out because of the nature of Facebook communication: The Public Announcement.

At first, I just lost interest and abandoned the thing, but then my mum found it together with the public profile that said: ‘Religion: Eeeek!’ and I had to tell all sorts of lies in order to get her to trust me enough to look after her during her illness without her having to worry about my supposed-to-be immortal soul whilst departing from this vale of tears.

The next step was to suspend the profile, so I did that. The thing after that was a re-activation notification. ‘I’ve been hacked!’ thought I, but no, apart from a re-activation I hadn’t requested, all was in order with my account.

So I had a go at changing the password and deleting the Facebook thingy. This led to a message that said it’d be suspended for a time in case I changed my mind about consigning it to the oblivion it deserves.

Well, there wasn’t much I could do about that, but before the two weeks were over, I got another re-activation notification. So I went through the whole process again. I am the opposite of pleased.

Facebook: You can check out any time you like, but you can NEVER leave!

Today’s pic. A face: mine. Does it tell you anything worth knowing? Thought not.

  1. Good Morning (my time) Andrea! Did you have your coffee? Facebook is valued at 50 BILLION dollars! That is the kind of manufacturing we do in America now, giving a lot of worth to nothing! I am on Facebook but I lost my password over a year ago. We lose things with cancer! I think I have seven friends and I will tell you that is my personal "best"!
The photo? It was a bright sunny day and you are smiling about something secretive! I'll go check your facebook page to find out what really happened.

  2. Wow a blogger from South Africa!
I visited your blog through another blog 2 or 3 days back and found it very interesting.

Yes Chair designing too needs a lot of talent.
This Fb is really getting on my nerves. It changes without taking any body's opinion, it is becoming boring. I had deactivated it about 3 years ago, then relatives urged me to re activate it again so I am still there.
So many useless application (some of them you can't do anything about), I am really getting fed up of it. I don't know when I will be forced to deactivate my account.
    Happy New Year!
Regarding your picture, I can only tell you are very smart and attractive.

  3. Almost midnight her MM so I think I will simply say goodnight from my end and get back to comment on your smiling face and opinion on fb my morning.
I do enjoy your writing style.

  4. I'm tempted to join Facebook just so you can officially admit there is a nut on board, but no - I'm still not interested. I joined MySpace once a long time ago and I got nothing but porn offers from it. That, plus it wouldn't let me delete the account later when I tried.

  5. I find Facebook pretty annoying. And I agree that it's mostly a place for people to pretend that everything is perfect and/or brag about how great they are.

  6. My husband is on facebook, because it is just about the only way he knows what is going on in his daughters lives, sad. I could care less about it. I like doing the blogging thing, and although some peoples blogs are a lot of fantasy, mines pretty well me. What you read is what I am. That's what I like about reading your posts. Plus you're just so darn interesting. Your photo...very attractive. To me you have the look of over fed up and coming into a smile.

  7. Facebook is annoying. I've deactivated my account several times but it never goes away. Finally, I rejoined because of some of the people I know via Blogger or locally wanted to friend me. None of it is substantive. Mostly for kids, seems to me. A marketing tool.
This too shall pass. AOL at one time was similar. I spent several hours on the phone a decade ago just to deactivate my account.
I'll have to say though that I'm shocked at how many people put in their real birth date on Facebook! YIKES!
Blogging is kind of similar. I have followers that I don't know, have never met, and probably only follow me so I'll follow them. But I still keep that widget out there and notice right away if I get a new one. It use to piss me off if I followed someone and they don't follow me. And then, I got over it. I mean, it's just an ego thing, right? It's not like it means anything.
Is blogging out of date yet? Are we all just internet dinosaurs? Uh, I'm thinking we are.
What were you talking about? I got a little sidetracked by the sound of my own typing.
Your photo tells me that you are beautiful.

  8. i'm a facebooker & i like it, but i think it's crappy that it won't tell you how to permanently delete your account. however, when once helping a friend to delete her account, i found that it can be done once & for all. you'll just have to google the path since facebook won't give it up.

  9. Your photo tells me you've very "arty." I'm on Facebook and have very few friends. I joined so I could look at relatives' photos. I post very little and visit about once a month.

  10. I Deactivated my FB two days ago, seriously! So funny. I did a lot of research before hand and what I learned was that if you really want your FB presence deleted, you actually have to go in and manually delete your info...I did that with much success! I think it's pretty creepy that FB gives out your info to third parties...I want to be more anonymous than that. Good luck getting rid of the thing!

  12. I facebook some, but only to keep up with highschool friends and the relatives who use it. I'd say it's good for keeping up, but that's about it. I've never made a facebook friend that I've ever felt really close to. You don't learn much about anyone on there, and that suits me fine.

  13. I have a facebooky thing, and the only thing I use it for is to tell people I've just done a new blog. Apart from that - no. I'm really not interested in finding out that little Liza, two years old, has just passed her first poo in three days...

  14. I think I've been pretty fortunate with FB. I only befriend people who are genuinely friends in real life, and it's been a great way to get back in touch with people from my past.
Having said that, I've also had friend requests from people who actually detest me. They wouldn't wee on me if I were on fire, yet they want to be my friend on FB. Go figure...

    Thanks for sharing.

  15. MM I really like what I see in your picture. There is beauty and inner peace.
As for the fb thing. I like it as it gives me the opportunity to see photos of grandchildren and family that I may otherwise not see.
As I have not tried to 'close' or 'de-activate' my account I can say that I have had no problems. It is also a great place for me to post quotes on grief and loss as many of my fb 'friends' have come to me through the memory-of site set up to pay tribute to Jezz

  16. Folks: I really made an effort to give appropriate replies to all of you, but Google dropped me and I lost the lot! I'm ever so cross, and, if you'll pardon me, I don't feel like going through it all again but to sum up:
Thanks all for your opinions and to those of you that have a constructive use for Facebook: well done! It must have taken some effort on your part. I mean it.
I wasn't fishing for compliments with the pic, but I sure as anything got a whole lot. I will become insufferable at this rate!

  17. I hate when Google does that, and you have to look at the clock, and your pulse to decide if you want to reconstruct it all. I don't blame you one bit.
